  1. Over in Newcastle they have this old custom at Shrove Tuesday; they get three pancakes and cover them with treacle. Then they stick a sixpence in the treacle on one, and then put the pancakes on a string, and two boys hold the string, one at each end. Then any boy or girl who wants to get the sixpence is blindfolded before he searches for the money and when he gets the pancakes on which the sixpence is he keeps the sixpence. It is great fun looking at them trying to get the sixpence.
