    Then parted from the chair of state;
    The guests assemble for the fête.
    An owl sailed from St. Finan's Tower,
    Hooting and screeching aloud,
    Distracted to know why at this hour.
    Assemble this nightly crowd -
    And perches him on a hoary tree.
    To note the elfin revelry.
    Then from the ivy steeple,
    For music, bass and triple;
    Came a cricket and beetle;
    And a slug upon their track
    Striving an air to hum,
    With a tambour on his back,
    To beat the little drum,
    And through the iron wicket,
    Straight to the Trysting - tree,
    Led the chiruping cricket,
    Piping a gathering glee.
