    It appears that on the night of the murder Father Mac Cartan dined with Lord Donoughmore's steward at Palmerstown House, now the Stewart Institution, having held a station for a few days previously in the neighbourhood.
    When returning home about 10 o'clock he was wantonly fired at by one of the gang of robbers, who had no knowledge of him or his sacred office and who apparently attacked him for the sake of whatever articles of value he might happen to have in his possession.
