- There are no forts, fairy or otherwise in this district. But I have seen several of them in County Monaghan and in North Louth. I think they were built by the old Irish chiefs. They were their home or stronghold. They were built round like this sketch with two or three rings which were built with sods of clay to about a height of ten feet. The space in between was filled with water so as to drown the attackers if they got through the other rings the banks of which were very slippy when wet. They had caves in the centre where the women of the defenders hid if they were hard pressed in battle.
