his dog which was with him and was ever his faithful companion jumped between him and the bed. Every time he attempted to go near the bed the dog acted in the same way. He thought this very strange so he decided to find out what was the matter with the bed which the dog would not allow him to go near. Taking up his riding crop he touched the bed with it. As he did so he was surprised to see the bed descend in a cellar below. It seems there was a trap set beneath it and when persons went into it the bed sank and they were thus caught in the trap. Lord Gormanston however made his escape. He was deeply attached to his dog ever after and when the dog died there was a beautiful tomb-stone erected to his memory. This tombstone can be seen to the present day by persons visiting Gormanston Castle. This is evidence of the truth of the story.
