- In days gone by the people used have to make their own candles and soap and many other things. There was a man in the townland of Kilclooney by the name of Walsh who used barrels and tubs. About the same time there was two brothers in the village of Clonea named John and William Shanahan who used to make tubs, firkins and other things.There lived in Clonea about thirty years ago an old woman by the name of Mrs Brett. Her husband died when her family were young. She could not leave the children so she began making brown sugar sticks. She used sell them at four a penny. There were about a foot long and very sweet so for this reason she sold a lot of them to the school children. She also used to sell delisk and gooseberries. She used to get up a five o'clock in the Summer and walk to Ballyvoile to pick delisk. This is how she made her living. Butter was made in many places in this locality about fifteen years ago.(continues on next page)
