    But alas; black misfortune has caused me for to sail.
    Far away o'er the ocean from the pride of Nire Vale.
    Sad was our parting, my true love and I

    She vowed she'd be true till the heavens would fail
    To cast their bright rays on the plains of Nire Vale.
    In far distant countries wanders poor me,
    In the famous great city and land of the free,
    My grief-stricken mind has cause to bewail,
    When I cast a bright thought on the pride of Nire Vale.
    Last night in my slumbers I had a strange dream,
    I dreamt I was dwelling down by a clear stream,
    When a voice came to me in a mournful wail,
