  1. Long ago there lived in this country a famous giant. He was so famous that he could tear anything to bits. There was also another giant in Scotland. When he heard of the famous giant in Ireland he said that he should go to Ireland to see if he was better then himself. He went across to Ireland and he came to the house where he asked for something to eat. The woman gave him cake and meat. After he had them eaten he asked for the great giant and the woman said that he was not inside. The giant was in a cradle in the middle of the kitchen and the woman said that it was only a baby. The giant of Scotland went over to the cradle and put his finger near the baby's mouth and the baby bit off his thumb. The giant
