- Long ago the walls of the houses were bult of mud and cut-straw and covered with thatch. Some of them were also built of stone and were roofed with slate of a rough kind. There were only one room and a kitchen in the small house and the chimney was at the end of the roof in the kitchen. There was a door leading from the kitchen to the room where the beds were. These houses were most unhealthy and are now replaced with new cottages which are very comfortable
