  1. At the time of the hedgeschools, pupils never went for instruction to the teachers on Saturday. That was the masters washing day, and as he had but one shirt, he had to stay in bed while that was being washed and dried. Tradition has it, that Saturday was a day of brilliant sunshine. He could not afford to buy a second shirt, as in those days teachers received no salaries but lived on the few pence and halfpence which they received from their pupils.
