  1. The landlord of this place is the Duke of Devonshire. He owned it for about 200 years. Raleigh got this place from Queen Bess after the wars.
    After some years he sold it to the Earl of Cork. A daughter of the Earl married the Duke of Devonshire and got this estate for her fortune. That's how he became the landlord.
    They were not bad landlords. They gave the tenants decent houses. The evictions were few.
