  1. I often remember my mother (go ndéanadh Dia grásta agus trócaire ar na marbh) making candles. When we killed old cows we melted the fat in a pot. This she put in a tub and put a stick across the top of the tub. She put thick cord hanging into the fat from the stick. After a while she took up the stick and left it aside. Each day she heated the fat and dipped the cords on the stick into it till they were thick enough. Then she put them aside till they were wanted.
