  1. Redmond Kiely was a very talented man. He was a hedger. There was no school in Affane. twenty or thirty boys and girls were going to him in my time, some of them were as big as I am and bigger. He used to teach at the side of the road in a field near my house in Shanbaille. he taught Arithmetic, writing, reading, history of Co. Waterford. he taught us mensuration. He used to be measuring land. He had only one hand, the left one, and you could see the fingers of the other growing upon his arm.All the children had to wait till he'd come home. He used to teach to boys as big as ever they were. No education to come up to it now.
    A minister named Fry lived down in the public house near Moores. He was supposed to be crazy. He had an argument with Kiely on religion, but Redmond beat him. When Sean Phaid another arguer on religion, heard it, he said "why didn't you send for me and I'd polish him off. Scripture? What did he know about it?" And they drank all the porter in the shop to defend religion! I was Godfather to his son. He had a blackboard
