  1. By the ditches the teachers taught; they had no exact school, for they were hunted from glen to glen. Colman and Moloney were the teachers. Each night the teachers used to get lodging in a farm-house. The teachers were paid by the children as they had to bring a penny each week.
    Irish was spoken both by teachers and pupils in all subjects. Writing was done on slate. There were seats for the young children and the rest had to stand. The teachers used to spend two years in each district.
