  1. The following account of nicknames in the district has been obtained from my own observations and from judicious questioning. As you are aware, no doubt, country-folk are particulary "touchy" about investigating such a question as this.
    In this particular district (I do not pretend to know much about any other) there are not many sir-names. As an inevitable result there must be two or more people with the same christian and sir-names in several instances. To solve this difficulty the people call each other such names as - :
    Paddy Frank Néill, Joe Red Frank, Paddy John Eoghany, Pat the Barley, Pat the Bush, Scanlan, etc. to distinguish them. This also of course is due not only to the scarcity of christian names. The people are remarkably fond of such simple and thoroughly Irish names as, Mary, John, Patrick, Brigit etc. I know one instance where there are two John Brodericks living in the same village
