  1. There are four forges in the district. The smiths are Mr Cawley, Mr Mash, Mr McNamara and Mr Murphy. Their fathers and grandfather's were smiths before them Mr Cawley Mr Walsh and Mr McNamara live in Crossmolina. Mr Murphy owns two forges one in Derryhilagh and the other one in Ratestreet. The implements used by the smith are a big sledge and a small sledge, a pincers a vice an anvil and a bellows. The forge has a roof of slates and it has no (kind) special kind of a door. The smith shoes horses and asses. He does not shoe cattle. The smiths make and repair ploughs ect.
