  1. Before paraffin lamps were made the people in this district had no light except rush candles.
    When the rushes were cut they were peeled. Then a pan of tallow was melted and the peeled rushes were pulled one by one through the fat. Each time this was done the candle became bigger.
    Another kind of candles were made called tow candles. The tow was dried and drawn through fat and left up to dry. Those candles showed
