  1. Up to about forty years ago all the linen was home-made. It took a lot of time and labour and it was discontinued.
    The flax was sown in Spring and pulled when a blue flower appeared. It attained the height of four feet. After pulling it was tied in sheaved and thrown into a lake to soften. It was left there about a fortnight and then it was taken up and spread out thinly to dry. When it was perfectly dry it was "beetled" and afterwards "scutched". The crust falls off with the scutching
