    The teachers in the hedge schools kept the spark of learning alive in the Irish race.
    Not for from where Keenagh Church now stands a hedge school was situated. It stood on the side of a little green overlooking the calm shiny waters of a brook. The hut was made of mud and stones. It had an earthen floor. Straw of heather was sometimes scattered on the floor for the comfort of the pupils. The pupils studied out of doors
