  1. There was an old school in Shraheen where Mr. McHale and Mr. Daniel Sheridan were teaching. They were from the district. They were living in their own houses. The pay was small in those days. The subjects they taught were reading, writing, geography arithmetic and grammar. Irish was not taught in school, English was taught in school. The old people liked Irish. The children had books, English Books. The children used to write. The used to write with pen and pencil. They had slates and desks. The teacher used to sit on a chair at the fire. The teachers spent five or six years in one place. The teachers were good scholars in the opinion of the people. They had respect for the teachers.
