- Cloonbrone ChurchThere was an old church in the townland of Cloonbrone about a mile north of this school. The ruins are still to be seen just inside the gate at the entrance to Deelcastle. It was about twenty yards to the north side of the entrance gate. The gate-house is still there. Some people say it was a Catholic church but it was not. It was a Protestant church and it was built by James Cuffe over one hundred years ago at the time of the Catholic Emancipation Bill. This James Cuffe resided at Castlegore. Himself and Daniel O'Connell were great friends and James Cuffe promised to help Daniel O'Connell. But himself and O'Connell quarrelled and O'Connell called him a cross-born.- Then Cuffe turned against O'Connell and through spite he built the old church at the gate-house and it was said that there was service in it once.
