  1. Gurteens we are told by the old people was a place where fairies used to assemble from all parts of Mayo. As the story goes on we are told of a farmer who was building a new house and quarried some stones from one of the forts. When the house was build the farmer and his family went to live in it. The first night the family were scared at midnight by the good people known as the fairies. They were mounted on white horses and wore red jackets and green caps.. They danced all around the house to the music of the bagpipes and continued to do so until the cock crew at 4am in the morning. The same thing happened the next night, on the third night the stones which was quarried out of one of the forts was hurled against the like the noise out of a cannon gun. The farmer then decided to leave back the stones and built his house with other stones.
