    A Long time ago there lived in Water Lane, Ballina three women who earned their living by washing.

    A long time ago there lived in Water Lane, Ballina three women who earned their living by washing. They used to do the washing every night and when they would have it finished they would go over to the River Moy to rinse them.
    One night when they had their washing finished they went over to the River Moy as usual. They rinsed their clothes near a lane which was there at that time. They were just on the point of returning home when "lo!" they heard a great rumbling. The rumbling went on and the three women waited. After some time the rumbling became slower and less noisy. They looked up and they saw a dead carriage coming towards them. They moved back into the shadows and the carriage went in to the lane in which they had been washing previously and disappeared.
