    left her behind so far that he could not even see her coming after him. Nevertheless he did not stop the speed till he reached the Well of the World's End, and filled his bottle with water. Having done so he turned back, and had returned nearly half way back when he met the witch, and she was out of breath, making all the speed she could. Oh you have won, she said. Let us sit down and she began telling a story, but while telling the story she managed to put a magic pin, called the Pin of Slumber into the man's hair. He immediately went off in a deep sleep, and he would not have wakened yet if the pin was in his hair. As soon as the witch saw that he was fast asleep she took his bottle of water, and spilled it, and then started off to fill her own at the Well of the World's End. While all this was happening Conn and his men were waiting anxiously to see which of the two runners should return first. But when the man of the Swift Leg had not returned as soon as he should have done, they all knew that something had happened. So the man of the Listening Ear lay down, and put his ear to the ground and listened for a while. Then he said to
