  1. The Knoxes of Castle-Rea were the Landlords of this District. They had about one thousand actes of land. Their land extended from Cortoon to Belderrig. They had not many tenants in this District only Paddy Birrane, Fattagh, Brogan, Thomas Convey and Tom Rogers. They had several tenants back in the Mountainous District but I do not know their names. The people came to Colonel Knoxe's house to pay him the rent.
    Thomas Convey died some years ago. His sister Mary is still living in Killala.The Bittanes and Brogans emigrated to America. One of the Brogans family became a priest and another one of them was a school inspector. The remains of their houses are still to be seen in Castle Rea.
    The Knoxes were not bad landlords. They never evicted their tenants. They erected a Tuck Mill at Tully and a Flax Mill at Palmerstown. It gave great
