    They peeled the green skin off the white part and tied them in a little bundle and left them by the fire to season. Then a bit of fat or suet was got and heated on a tin until it melted and became a liquid.
    If the rushes were well dried they were mixed with the liquid. When dry and hardened the rushes were sorted away for use.
    There was a bit of tin tacked around the top of the candle. This was called a "socket". It could be moved up or down as it was needed, or according as the candle was wearing.
