  1. At the time Colonel Knox lived in Castlerea House Palmerstown a British cruiser was wrecked somewhere on the coast of Belderrig. The greater part of the crew was saved by the use of a life boat. Aboard the wrecked cruiser was a considerable amount of gold which they saved and placed in a box in the lifeboat. Colonel Knox hearing of the fate of the cruiser went to the scene of the disaster and persuaded the survivors to pull the lifeboat all the way along the coast to Castlerea.
