  1. Shrovetide being the season that most marriages took place the first Sunday in Lent was called "Chalk Sunday," when strokes of Chalk were put on people's backs. This was done for a lark when the people, appeared at the church, who were eligible for marriage, and had not got married.
    This chalking ment they were on "the shelf" for that year at any rate.

  2. The feast of the assumption the 15th August
    This holiday was not always kept in the usual way of pleasure seeking.
    It is a solemn and serious time for making pilgrimages to the different Blessed Wells.
    Now these pilgrimages are made particularly to Knock church (Co Mayo) and
