  1. The 17th March is the day of a National Festival for the Patron Saint of Ireland St Patrick. It comes next to Xmas as a day of great joy and hope. Long ago it was kept in a grand simple fashion. The young people in rural districts worked hard at the spring work so as to have it well advanced by St Patricks Day. The boys then got one shilling for pocket money to "drown the Shamrock" and th girls got bright green ribbons to tie their dresses. Of course all attended church in the evening. There were games played by the men with the women and maidens looking on. It was an old custom to give a small gift on this occasion which was called a "Patrick's Pot." Eggs were always cooked (boiled) for breakfast and that egg was called a "Patricks Pot."
