    The Care of the Feet
    In former times children didn't wear boots until 12 or 13 years old. One old lady goes barefoot still even in winter, she is over 70. Children go barefoot in summer but wear boots all winter
    When washing their feet people try to avoid spilling or splashing the water because they say Our Lord didn't spill any when washing the apostles' feet.
    Boots are made and repaired locally. The trade is a tradition in the family of shoemakers here. The one shoemaker in the district is dumb The trade has been a tradition in the family for generations.
    Clogs are made at Westport Quay. They were worn by farm labourers in olden times. Poor children wear them at the present time.
    There are no records of leather-making in the district, nor of foot coverings of sheep-skin or untanned hide.
