  1. When I was a girl all the marriages took place in Shroft (Shrove tide) The fortunes usedn't be very big - twenty or thirty pounds, a cow, and maybe a feather tick. The whole fortune wasn't given at the time of the marriage only about half it.
    The remainder was given when the first child was born.
    When a girl's match was made, a round of poteen was brewed and a good piece of American bacon bought. Maybe a few fowl would be killed also.
    As the bride left the house for the chapel a horse-shoe nail was put into her hand for luck and the tongs was flung after her.
    The men rode on horses and the girls rode behind them.
