  1. About fifty or sixty years ago the majority of the people in this district used oatmeal cakes instead of soda-bread.
    They made those by getting some oatmeal and mixing water with it until it was quite stiff. It was then rolled out to a thickness of about one inch.
    These cakes were not baked in ovens. They were left instead beside the fire standing upright against a clean board and were turned when necessary.
