Seventy years ago there were no artificial manures. They farmers dug up their land in sods. When the sods were quite dry they gathered them into heaps and burned them. Then they scattered the ashes on the field. If a farmer now has now enough farm-yard manure he goes to the shop and buys artificial manure. - About eighty years ago, James Ruane, Doontas, carried a five hundred bag on his back.(continues on next page)
