Lighting the firs. People do not like to light the fire early on May Day, lest the fairies see the smoke. In case it is necessary to light it early, put a pieace of the Round- berry tree (called bush) in the fire. This prevents the fairies seeing the smoke.
There is a belief that the fairies are out on the night before May-day.

  2. 23rd June - St John's night.
This is bone-fire night. No one dances that night on account of the girl, who danced before the execution of John the Baptist. When people are leaving the fire, they bring a lighted sod, and throw it into one's own field; the crops there will then be good.
    This custom is dying out.
