Long ago there were no schools as there are now, but the children were taught in the open air beneath a hedge. Those schools were known as Hedge schools. It is said that there were no Hedge schools in Keelogues but there were many of them in the neighbourhood of Balla where the woods were thickest.
The school fee was ninepence or shilling per quarter year but many of the
