    Long ago there were more people in Ireland than there are now. In 1845 there were 8 1/2 million people in the country.
    The most of them were very poor and they lived on potatoes and milk.
    They had plenty of stock and grain but they had to sell them in order to get money to pay the rent.
    In 1846 the potato crop failed and a great famine raged all over the country. The people died in thousands in
