- To thatch a house a man must have about ten hundred of rods. The rods must be cut into lengths of about two feet and pointed at each end. They are called scallops, because it must be possible to curve or bend them. He then must make bobbing of straw and put them on the ridge of the house where the two ends meet. He must have a little wooden hammer called a mallet. He then starts to thatch beginning at the part of the roof nearest to himself and works upwards. When he has one streak up he puts in a line of bobbins.
