People used to dye clothes long ago with the moss they gathered off the rocks, with a sharp instrument such as a knife. They would put it into a pot of cold water which they would bring to the boil and then put in the articles to be dyed. They boiled all together for some time. When washed and dried the dyed articles would be a grey colour.
