- Long ago when people wanted to dye clothes they pulled moss off the stones, they put it into a cloth, put it into a pot, which they put down on the fire to boil, and put whatever they wanted to dye down along with it. When they took it up it was coloured brown. If they wanted to dye clothes red, they bought madder in the shop, put it into a cloth, put it down on the fire to boil in water, put what ever they wanted to dye down along with it and when they took it up it and washed it, it was dyed red.
