- Long ago women boiled logwood in a big pot of water. When it had boiled for some time they put in whatever clothes they wanted to dye and boiled all again. They then lifted the clothes on a stick which was arranged across the mouth of the pot so that the liquid dripped into the pot. Next they put in copperas. When this was dissolved, the clothes were again returned to the pot and again boiled. Then when taken out, washed and dried, the clothes were dyed a good black color.
