  1. There was an old school in Carragolda. Mr. Thomas Carroll, Miss O'Grady and Miss O'Donnell taught there. Miss O'Grady afterwards became Mrs. John Egan and was Principal Teacher in Turlough N.S. Castlebar. Miss O'Donnell was a native of Ballaghaderrin. She taught in Derrinea before Mr. Harte.
    It was a kind of barn with a loft over-head where the teacher live while they taught there. It now belongs to James Higgins of Carragolda. My grandfather went to school there. The children learned Arithmetic and English writing and reading and a little Irish. The pay the teacher got was each child was to bring some kind of a present to them every week. Each child used to bring a little seat with him. They used to sit on the floor and leave their slates on the seats and write their lessons with
