The month of January 1834 was a very wet month. There was a terrible rainstorm during the second week. There was constant rain from Tuesday morning until Thursday evening, when a storm arose and lasted nearly all night. The country looked very miserable, nothing but flooded fields could be seen, where rivers had overflown their banks. The roads were flooded in low lying parts. The river Moy at Ballylahan Bridge was like a large lake. No traffic would cross the bridge for several days.
