My father told me that the night of the Big Wind in 1839 was the night on which my Grandmother was born. On that night a man tied his mother Maire Beag to a tree for safety, because all the thatch was blown off the house and when he went out to look at her, she and the tree were gone with the wind. I was told that the storm began in the evening and it lasted all night. It stopped sometime in the morning.
