    Now whether a troop came through Kiltimagh or only a couple of wounded who came with some local men we do not know. Certainly there were two, Browne and Gill from this very village of Garryroe who had joined the French. Browne and Gill fought later at Carrignagat (between Colooney and Ballisodare) and Ballinamuck Co. Longford the final battle.
    After the surrender of the Franco-Irish army at Ballinamuck the French were treated as prisoners of war and sent back to France. The poor Irish were treated as rebels. The two Garryroe boys were lodged in Galway goal. Browne’s mother approached Denis Browne of Claremorris High Sheriff of the county a very influential gentleman. She claimed a relationship. The sheriff nicknamed “Soap the Rope Browne” from the numbers
