- Fairs were at cross-roads and in farmer's houses long ago. When a person sells a beast the man who buys the the beast marks it rubbing red raddle on it or puts (it) a string round its neck it puts mud on the flank. Sometimes he cuts the hair of the sides. When a man sells a beast he never gives away the halter because they say it is not lucky to give it away. When anyone sells a beast they give away airgead or luck money and sometimes they give two shillings. The lucks money given depends on the price of the beast.
