  1. Long ago the schools in our district were not so plentiful as they are now. The schools made then were much smaller than the sh schools nowadays.
    Long ago the schools that existed in our district were called hedge schools. Those schools were made of brambles of the trees. The brambles of the trees were woven in and out. The inside was lined with bags. The roof was also made of brambles. On top of the brambles scraws out of the bog were put in order to keep out the rain. Those schools were built in the middle of the district in a shady place.
    The best learned man in the district always came and taught in these schools. Sometimes strange teachers came through the district and taught for their living. Every child paid those teachers a penny or twopence each every monday morning.
    The names of those teachers were Garret Burke, Michael Vesey and Martin Casey. Those people travelled from district to district teaching. Those teachers lodged in the village in which which the hedge school was built. Those teachers taught also in farm barns. There was a barn in
