  1. In bygone days there was a spinning wheel in nearly every house.
    Wool was got from sheep and people who had no sheep bought it in the shops. The girls carded it into rolls.
    When there was spinning to be done, nine or ten women gathered to the house and each woman took a spinning wheel with her. Nearly every old woman took a girl with her to carry the wheel because it was too heavy for herself. When the girls reached the house, they did not leave again
