  1. Cairns are large circular heaps of stones which were built over the graves of Kings and Chiefs in olden times. These cairns were built on hills and mountains and only one person was buried under each.
    Many of these cairns are still to be seen throughout Ireland. There is a large cairn in Knocknarea and it is said that Queen Maeve is buried there. The stones that were put in these cairns were taken to the tops of hills on the backs of men or in hand baskets as no carts could be taken to the top of these hills.
    Cromlechs can be still seen in cemeteries. Four or six pillars were erected over a grave and a flat stone was put on these pillars. They are rarely met with throughout the country now-a-days.
