    where the school is to-day. A man named Thomas Tarpey taught in that school. He was a native of Larganboy and was paid by each pupil at the rate of two shillings per quarter. Both teacher and pupil spoke Irish and very little English was spoken. They were taught Reading, Writing Arithmetic and spelling and whoever had the Double Spelling Book off by heart was considered a perfect scholar. The pupils used to write head-lines such as "A man without learning and wearing good clothes. Is like a gold ring on a barrow pig's rose.
