  1. As a rule the people get married the week before Lent. They would not get married the thirteenth of any month. It is a general custom found this district on Shrove Tuesday sometimes called "salting" Tuesday in the Towns to throw salt at the different girls who pass by as a token to keep them from getting stale during Lent. Long ago the people gave cattle to the boy or the girl as a fortune and also a feather bed and home made sheets
